Digital Screens in Buildings - Player Management

Player Management

Display5 uses a browser on a player to play your Shows.

Our open architecture means that Display5 is 100% flexible as to what typePlayers Player Management of player can be used for office screen types: a Windows player; a Linux player; an Android player.  Any player that supports an industry-standard browser – Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera, etc.  You can even have different players and browsers in your network of displays.

More Players to Manage

As your network of digital screens grows you will want the ability to manage all those players that are part of the digital media communications platform.  Display5’s Player Management module gives you the ability to:

  • Check the status of your players
  • And, send alerts when a player is down
  • Further, you can re-start a player
  • And, see what is playing on a player
  • Register Windows, Chromebox, Linux, Apple, and Android players
  • And, you can mix player types in your display network
  • Monitor network connection speeds
  • Assign players to Groups, Shows and Emergency zones
  • Keep track of player’s: name, location, and IP address
  • Log player events and transactions

Any Player with a Full Function Browser

The Display5 platform supports any kind of player which has a full-function browser.  Full function means it supports the latest HTML features.  Less functional browsers also work, but will not support all of Display5’s capabilities.

The Muscle to Play the Content

Further, you need to consider what type of content you will play on the screens.  If it is very simple images, tables, and text, then a low power player will work.  However, if the need is to play two 4K videos at the same time, you need a player that has the technical muscle to power that content without any hesitation.

You can mix player types within your network.  For example, allowing a department with Raspberry PIs to be part of the overall Display5 digital media communications platform.

On the other hand, if asked, we recommend commercial players for the corporate environment.  Consumer devices can be hit and miss and be a lot more work to manage in the long run.

Commercial Players for Digital Media Communications

When evaluating commercial players from a manufacturer for use throughout your network of displays consider the following:

  1. Is there a choice of players OSs: Windows, Chromebox, Linux, or Android?
  2. And, do they offer digital signage players and integrated (screen+processor) panels units for outside a room, or on a shelf?
  3. Are they truly commercial, e.g. solid-state, fanless, reliable with low MTF?
  4. Most importantly, do they offer a variety of processing power choices depending on the kind of content you are playing?
  5. And finally, do they offer the ability to monitor/manage the player hardware across your global deployment? e.g. Can you subscribe to that capability to monitor and manage: device temp, turn the hardware on/off, perform firmware updates. etc?

Integration

Integration Overview

One of the cornerstones of our web-based digital media communications platform is our integration capability.

Most importantly, a robust integration footprint opens up more content possibilities from different sources.

And, Web-based architectures easily integrate with other technologies and platforms. For example, doing an interface to an Oauth, RESTful API, or web-service API integration is straight forward.

Similarly, we also integrate into the fabric of an enterprise’s IT infrastructure.  For instance, databases, SSO, telephony platforms, or office platforms.

Technology Continues to Move to Web-based Digital Media Communications

And, with more technologies moving to the web, integration is easy.  Simply insert a URL.  For example, a Display5 Show plays on a Zoom room system between meetings right out-of-the-box.

We categorize our integrations in the items listed directly below.  Click on them below to explore them in detail.

The integration options are limitless!  And, we are always open to more integration possibilities to make our digital media communications platform even more robust.

Telephony Integration – Digital Media Communications

Display5 has a complete suite of Contact Center widgets and modules.

We have tight integrations with Amazon, Avaya, Cisco, and Genesys.  Display5 pulls in queues and stats in real-time to display on wallboards (digital signs) or on an agent’s desktop in a variety of ways.

See the stats change in real-time, receive notifications and alerts, combine the stats with any other content type.

The possibilities are unlimited!

For more details see the “Contact Center” card below.

Office Calendaring Integration

Display5 has a complete suite of widgets for each calendaring platform we integrate with: Google Calendar, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Office 365 and we expect EMS to be available soon.

In short, it pulls in the room information you want on the display type you want.  A variety of widgets let you configure and combine the room information exactly the way you want.  Most importantly, being a 100% web-based platform gives you capabilities that aren’t available on most room info panels.

And, we are open to integrating with new room management systems.

The possibilities are unlimited!

For more details see the “Room Schedule & Booking Panels” card below.

Video-on-Demand Enterprise Platforms

Display5 has a deep integration with enterprise video platforms. For example, Kaltura, Qumu, and others.

These integrations allow users of these platforms to re-purpose their video assets and live streams onto a whole new digital media channel. That is to say, the enterprise video assets and live streams can be played live on digital signs, video walls, and room systems and panels.

Display5 uses their players and video assets directly on public-facing screens across an organization.  The videos can play full screen, or be combined with any other content types on the screen canvas.

New Use Case for Enterprise Video Assets

Further, video assets to be used in creative ways on the screen canvas using Display5’s HMTL canvas editor widget, which is called Montage. For example, videos can be rotated, cropped, and combined with other drag and drop images, shapes, and texts.

In addition, Display5 has integrated processes with both enterprise video platforms to make it easier to adopt and seamlessly publish and share video content for digital displays.

Finally, with Display5’s unparalleled content control, the Shows playing on screens can be scheduled to switch the content playing on your digital displays to Live Streams for executive Townhall or all-hands live events.

Canvas Editors Based on HTML Standard

HTML canvases are fantastic for creating content and as a source of pre-made content templates.  They have hundreds of 1,000’s of designs that can be quickly loaded, modified, and published to your digital displays.

Display5 has integrated editors with both Canva and PosterMyWallThis blog goes into detail on the benefits of integrated editors.

In addition, Display5 has its own HTML canvas editor called Montage.  Montage is ideal for enterprise, on-premise deployments which limit their connections outside their own network.

Further, our web-based architecture makes integrating these editors possible.  ‘Canvas’ is a cornerstone of the HTML5 standard. We aim to continue to add these types of integrations for your favorite HTML canvas sources.

Database Integration in a  Digital Media Communications Platform

Organizations have databases that they want to tap into and pull out key performance indicators.  And then, they display that information to show in real-time on their digital signs in contact centers and operations centers. Or, in other common areas where they want to communicate organizational metrics to their employees or customers.

Display5 provides the ability to integrate into MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server 2008, 2012, and 2014, Oracle and other databases.  Data and key metrics can then be displayed on digital signs anywhere and anytime.  For example, using the Display5 Show Creation & Management module’s Table widgets, Graphs & Charts widget, or in a customized form.

Meeting Room Digital Signage

There are screens for presentations and video calls in almost every meeting room you enter.  Yet very few are used as digital signs between meetings.

Most importantly, meeting room technology is evolving from proprietary hardware codec and controllers to web-based technology. This opens the door for playing digital media messages on in-room screens.

For instance, the latest in-room systems from Cisco, Crestron, Mersive, and Zoom, accept a URL for digital signage display when the screens are not in use.  In other words, a Display5 Show can easily play on these room systems out-of-the-box.  Any kind of content, including live broadcast.

Secure Integration

The top web content providers use the OAuth token authentication process standard.

Display5 leverages this standard in numerous of its integrations.  This provides the highest level of security and at the same time provides the flexibility for individual account authentication for each user.

To sum up, our platform is integrated using OAuth with Twitter, Vimeo, O365, Google Cal, Google Maps, Instagram, and more.  We will continue to add OAuth integrations to our portfolio of widgets.

Room Schedule & Booking Panels

Room Scheduling with Same CMS as Digital Signs

The Display5 Room Booking module connects with your corporate calendaring system, either Office365, Google Calendar, or Microsoft Exchange.  Once it is connected, you can now display room booking information on panels (or tablets) outside your rooms.

Display5 uses a single CMS, to let users create canvases for room booking panels, digital signs, or video walls.  One CMS, multiple canvas types.

And, our platform pulls in the room information you want on the display type you want.  A variety of widgets let you configure and combine the room information exactly the way you want.  Most importantly, being a 100% web-based platform gives you capabilities that aren’t available on most room info panels.

Key Benefits of being a part of a Digital Media Communications Platform
  • First, the system allows the room info to be displayed on any type of screen/player.  For example, not only traditional room panels but on digital signs, video walls, or kiosks.  One CMS. One Platform.  Any type of content on any screen type.
  • Secondly, you can combine the room info with any other content widget on the display. Images, videos, tickers messages, weather, RSS feeds.  Any widget in the platform, including the integrated HTML canvas editors for Canva and PosterMyWall.

Contact Center

Real-Time Communication to Wallboards and Agent Desktop

Contact Centres have had digital signage deployed on their floors full of Agents for many years.  The digital displays are a way to communicate to the agents on the floor immediate information at a glance form their desks or as they walk the floor.

Display5 integrates directly into Contact Centre switches from Avaya, Cisco, Genesys, and many others, pulling critical data and displaying it in many ways:

  • Queue data; Average wait time; Longest call waiting; etc.
  • Create thresholds and display in different colors when the thresholds are hit
  • Email alerts when thresholds are hit and email reporting with a snapshot of data sent on a schedule you determine
  • Combine stats skills for single results
  • And more …

Combine Stats with Any Other Content-Type on the Digital Media Communications  Platform

This data can be displayed on the screens using Display5’s Table widgets, Charts & Graphs widget, or in a custom manner if required.

The Contact Centre screens are also used to communicate general corporate information to the Contact Centre employees:

  • For example, employee of the month
  • Similarly organizational events and town halls
  • Likewise, reminders for special promotions being supported by the Contact Centre
  • And, live custom ticker information
  • In addition, TV feeds if and when desired
  • To sum up, these are just a few of the capabilities.  There are endless possibilities.

And, with Display5’s digital media communication, web-based architecture platform the Contact Centre displays can also be used for a live corporate address.

Emergency Management

More Ways to do Emergency Messaging on a Digital Media Communications Platform

The Display5 digital media communications platform provides a range of capabilities to manage and display emergency messaging across campus and organization locations. Display5 is not limited to providing emergency messaging on just digital signs.  Any screen type connect to the Display5 platform can be incorporated into your emergency messaging communications.

Instantaneous Emergency Messaging

As a 100% web-based technology, Display5 has an unparalleled capability to instantly switch content. Similarly, content is triggered to play by other IoT sub-systems. For example, playing emergency alert notifications from various systems including, Omnilert, NOAA, or CAP.  In addition, Display5 supports instantly playing content on top of existing content.  In other words, over-programming or on-top content.

Most digital signage solutions download the content stream to play on the player attached to the screen.  If you want to switch the content immediately you can only do it IF all the emergency messaging is already loaded on the player as well.  Very hard to do if you have multiple streams of emergency messaging content or if you want to be able to do ad hoc switching or over-programming.

On-Top or Over-Programming

Without any additional software module, Display5 allows users to create op-top or over-programming of emergency messaging content.  That is to say, emergency messages play on top of the content which is currently playing on the screens.  Display5 provides the ability to have an unlimited number of On-top messages ready to play.  With just a few clicks of the mouse, the pre-programmed content will instantly appear on top of the existing content play.  And, it can be removed just as easily.

For a more detailed explanation please see this blog.

Advanced Emergency Management Module

Display5’s Advanced Emergency Management module provides you with ultimate flexibility and capability. Pre-built emergency Shows can be triggered either manually or automatically. Most importantly, our web-based architecture allows instant switching from regular programmed Shows to emergency Shows. To clarify, this is something that isn’t possible in digital signage platforms based on a player-based architecture.

There are 3 Levels of Emergency Management available with Display5’s Advanced Emergency Management module:

  1. Emergency Show Creation and Management
  2. Integration of Emergency broadcast services. For example, Omnilert, CAP or NOAA
  3. Management capability to:
    • Firstly, assign players to Emergency Groups and Zones (Emergency groups can be different than Player groups)
    • Secondly, to interpret Trigger Events, both manual and automated
    • Further, it accepts API routing from other IoT systems. For example, IP enabled Fire Alarm systems
    • And finally, the ability to customize an Emergency Dashboard of a Campus layout which can be managed via a touch screen in a security office for example

And, read Display5 Advanced Emergency Management for more details on these capabilities.

QR Code Management

QR Code Management Overview

One of the biggest impediments to widespread adoption of QR code use cases is the ability to manage the many QR codes across multiple platforms.  WIth a single CMS for screens in any building, or for the worker’s desktop, we solve the biggest impediment to widespread QR adoptions, and all the associated benefits.

But we don’t stop there.  Display5 has an integrated QR code generator and other ways the platform can be used to simplify QR code management in any organization.  Read more below.

Integrated QR Code Widget

With an integrated QR code widget, the Display5 platform takes another huge step forward in allowing an organization to effectively and easily manage QR codes across the organization.

Display5’s integrated QR Code widget allows users to instantly generate 8 different QR code types, size, color and instantly deploy the QR codes across all their digital media streams.

More QR Code Management Features

Updating QR codes becomes simple, with the integrated QR code generator. Simple update the QR code settings and it is instantly updated.  In addition, a single CMS and an integrated QR Code Generator widget simplify QR code management in the following ways:

  • Find where QR codes are used across all your content streams with a single, quick search
  • Color code QR codes in many different ways to help organize and identify QR code types or use cases
  • Integrate the use of QR codes across all your emergency management content streams
  • Use Display5’s industry leading content control capabilities to deploy and manage the how, when, where, and by whom the QR codes are displayed.

Screen Management

Digital Media Communications and Screen Management

As you start to do more with your network of display screens, you will want to be able to centrally control the screen functions – power, volume, brightness, etc.  And, this requirement increases as you use your displays for functions other than digital signage.

For example, if you schedule a Town Hall on your screens for a CEO update, then you will want to turn the volume on for the Town Hall.  But, when it ends, you will turn it off again.  After that, the displays are playing a Show without audio.  Further, ad hoc emergency situations may also present a need to turn the volume on or up, on the digital screens.

The Screen Management module gives you all the control you need over the screens.  Just like having a remote for every screen in your network!

To take advantage of the Screen Management capabilities you may need some small hardware components installed with each screen or ask about a software-only implementation of this capability.

Our Screen Management module offers some very powerful capabilities to manage your network of displays.

Cloud#1

Cloud or On-Premise

Display5’s Cloud digital signage as a solution (DSaaS) lets you, or any department within your organization, immediately get started with creating and playing their own digital signage Shows.  The full feature set of our signage CMS is available to test out the powerful capabilities of Display5.

When your requirements evolve and you need more robust Enterprise features as part of your digital display platform, Display5 offers you the choice of a dedicated hosted Cloud model or an on-premise server deployed behind your enterprise firewall.

Both solutions are modular – so only pay for the features you need!

Contact us to discuss which model and which modules are right for you.

Security

IT security is greatly simplified with Display5, as we are a browser-based technology. The Display5 software runs in the browser(s) which have already been certified by your IT organization.  Most importantly, browser software inherits the security clearance already performed by certifying the browser itself.

This is one of the ways Display5 can seamlessly weave itself into the IT fabric of an organization.

The process of certifying a new traditional, proprietary application within the IT environment of an organization can take more than a year, depending on the security review process and the backlog of work the IT security team may have.  A browser-based application is governed by the browser within which it runs.  Corporate IT has gone through the process of certifying one or more commercial browsers for use within the organization.

The additional work for security to certify a browser-based application consists primarily of just confirming that indeed the application runs in the browser and there is no other code outside the software which runs in the browser.

The top web content providers use the OAuth token authentication process standard.

Display5 leverages this standard in numerous of its integrations.  This provides the highest level of security and at the same time provides the flexibility for individual account authentication for each user.

Our digital media communications platform is integrated using OAuth with Twitter, Vimeo, O365, Google Cal, Google Maps, Instagram, and more.
